about

The Sunset Music Company was a now-legendary California-based jazz sextet. The band played a unique admixture of authentic, New Orleans-styled jazz and riff-oriented Harlem swing.

This 2-CD set captures the band during its 1979 European tour, at an intimate concert in Arnhem, the Netherlands. These superb “live” recordings preserve all the good-natured bandstand banter, and the enthusiastic response of the receptive Dutch audience.
Of course, you’ll also hear: the sensational, soulful cornet work of Jim Goodwin; the small-group swing master John “Butch” Smith (who is originally from Kansas City) playing his soprano and alto saxes; the solid rhythm playing (and wonderful singing) by the band’s leader, banjoist Lueder Ohlwein; strong, big-toned acoustic bass work by
Mike Fay; and the “New Orleans-to-New York” drumming of Jeff Hamilton. Naturally, a much younger Dan Barrett is in evidence all through this set, which shows off his personal brand of ensemble playing along with his readily-identifiable solo style.
These are “must-have” recordings for all fans of trad-to-swing-styled, small group jazz!
