In December of 2013, Rebecca Kilgore invited her longtime friend and colleague Dan Barrett to fly up to Portland, Oregon for a special concert and recording session. Both events were produced by Classic Pianos, a beautiful piano sales and showroom. For this special occasion, Becky and Dan asked a young pianist from Milan, Italy to join them. His name is Paolo Alderighi. Paolo is now happily married to the brilliant American pianist Stephanie Trick. They divide their time between Milan and St. Louis, Missouri.
Keeping a trio recording interesting from beginning to end offers challenges, but there is so much variety in this collection of fine old American popular songs that the whole CD goes by in a satisfying and rewarding way. From the swinging opener, Oh, Look At Me Now to the poignant closer, Mis’ry and The Blues, the threesome will take you on one of the musical rides of your life! Other selections in this wide-ranging set include: Just A Little Bit South Of North Carolina; an old, largely forgotten song by Isham Jones called Song Of The Blues; I’m Rhythm Crazy Now, originally recorded by Horace Henderson’s band in 1933; and Duke Ellington’s Serenade To Sweden. In keeping with the international theme for another tune, Paolo returns to Italy, and offers a beautiful solo rendition of Three Coins In The Fountain. Recording engineers Randy Porter and Bryan Shaw have brought out out the fullness of the exquisite Bösendorfer piano that Classic Pianos provided for the session! It’s actually one of two Bösendorfers that were in the studio. At Paolo’s suggestion, Dan sat down at the second piano for the last tune of the date. Both men accompanied Rebecca as she told about Mis’ry And The Blues. This is a special album by three special people.
