Dan Barrett was a young man when he visited Europe for the first time, in 1977, with the first edition of the special band called the Sunset Music Company. Two years later, he toured with the 1979 version of the band, which included the great Jim Goodwin on cornet, and the authentic New Orleans-styled clarinet of Bill Carter. The sextet was led by the incorrigible and magical Lueder Ohlwein, who played solid, swinging tenor banjo and could sing the blues the way you want to hear them sung. It short, the band and these tours changed Dan’s life. He counts his time with the Sunset Music Company as one of the most special highlights of his life.
This CD—recorded “live” at a jazz club in Düsseldorf--explodes with the excitement and spontaneity generated by the band at its hottest. Just listen to Goodwin’s oh-so- swinging lead playing on the opening selection, The Shiek Of Araby. Then there’s Lueder’s great vocal—including some inspired scatting—on Sentimental Gentleman From Georgia. Dan plays a version of Ory’s Creole Trombone with what he calls “youthful enthusiasm,” and the whole band shines on: The Lady Is A Tramp; Do What Ory Say; Savoy Blues; (Let’s Be) Fair and Square (In Love); and five more soulful songs.
